Classic Homemade Lasagna

Easy homemade lasagna is hands down the best comfort meal you could make for your family. It’s is stacked with layers of a flavorful ground turkey mea, tangy tomato sauce, creamy garlic ricotta mixture and an extra creamy cheese blend. This recipe makes a perfect weeknight dinner because it is so easy, comforting and full of fresh aromatic flavors.

While lasagna may seems intimidating to make, this recipe only requires a few easy and simple steps. All you need are ground meat, tomato sauce, lasagna noodles, cheeses and fresh herbs. 

Here is a quick guide: 

Meat Sauce: brown and mince the meat with onion, garlic and ground peppers. Add the tomato sauce and simmer for a few minutes. 

Cheese Mix: Combine ricotta with parmesan, mozzarella, parsley and one egg. 

Assemble Lasagna: Layer with meat sauce, lasagna noodles, ricotta, shredded mozzarella and parmesan and bake. 

That’s it! With just a few simple steps you will have a comforting meal in the tables in minutes. 

This is the order of layers:

  • sauce – noodles – ricotta – shredded  cheese
  • sauce – noodles – ricotta – shredded cheese
  • noodles  – sauce  – shredded cheese 

Notes:

This is a ground turkey lasagna but you can use ground beef, meatless beef or veggies.

You can substitute the cheese for your favorite kind of cheese. 

Let the lasagna sit/rest for at least 15 minutes once removed from the oven. This will keep it from breaking apart and becoming runny. It also helps it to keep its shape when cut.

 

Classic Homemade Lasagna

Ingredients

1 pound ground turkey or beef 

1 medium onion, finely chopped

1/2 cup fresh basil, chopped

1/3 cup fresh parsley, chopped

6 cloves of garlic, minced

1 teaspoon oregano

2 teaspoon smoked paprika

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/3 cup red wine or broth

15 ounces fire roasted crushed tomato

15 ounces tomato sauce

1 pound lasagna noodles

12 ounces shredded mozzarella cheese

12 ounces shredded parmesan cheese

Ricotta Mixture

6 ounces ricotta

1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese

1/3 cup mozzarella cheese

2 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

1 egg

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Lightly grease a 9x13 baking dish.
  2. In a large saucepan over medium heat, add a tablespoon of olive oil and ground turkey. Mince and simmer turkey meat for about 5 minutes. Add onion, garlic, paprika, salt, and cayenne. Cook for about 5-10 minutes until meat is no longer pink.
  3. Add the crushed tomato, tomato sauce, oregano, basil, parsley and red wine or broth. Stir well and simmer on low for 20 minutes. Stir constantly. 
  4. Cook the pasta according to the directions on box.
  5. In a medium bowl, prepare the ricotta mixture. Mix together the parmesan cheese, mozzarella cheese, parsely, salt, pepper, garlic powder, egg.  Set aside.
  6. To assemble: spread about 3/4-1 cup of the meat sauce in the bottom of the baking dish. Layer with lasagna noodles,  Spread the ricotta mixture on top and layer with shredded mozzarella and parmesan.Repeat the process with a second layer of meat sauce, lasagna noodles, ricotta cheese, mozzarella and parmesan. Finish with noodle, meat sauce and shredded mozzarella. 
  7. Lightly cover with aluminum foil, bake for 45 minutes, uncover for the last 15 minutes.
