Recipe Tips for Homemade Dairy-Free Chocolate Ice Cream

  • Use high-quality quality ingredients.
  • For the smoothest texture, blend the ingredients on high until mixture is completely smooth.
  • Use cold ingredients. Ensure your coconut cream and protein shake are cold before you start. This helps the ice cream mixture freeze more evenly.
  • Let the ice cream sit at room temperature for about 5-10 minutes before scooping. This makes it easier to serve and brings out the creamy texture.
  • If you don’t care for the protein addition in the recipe, you can also skip using the Orgain protein shake. Simply replace with a plant-based milk of choice and add 1 extra tablespoon of cocoa powder.

Nut-Free Substitute Tips

If your child or someone you’re serving to has a nut allergy, you can easily modify this homemade dairy-free chocolate ice cream recipe to be nut free. Here are some simple substitutions and tips to ensure your ice cream remains delicious and safe for those with nut allergies:

  • Skip Nut Based Ingredients: Though the cashews adds to the creaminess of the recipe, you can leave it out. The end result will be just as good.
  • Use Oat Milk: If you need a nut-free alternative to the Orgain protein shake, opt for oat milk
  • Replace Cashews with Sunflower Seeds: Instead of cashews, use raw sunflower seeds. Soak them in water for 2-4 hours to soften, then drain and rinse before blending. Sunflower seeds provide a creamy texture similar to cashews when blended.
