What are pinwheels?

Pinwheels are bite-sized rolled sandwiches made by layering fillings on a soft tortilla or wrap, rolling it tightly, and slicing it into spirals. They’re typically served cold and can be filled with deli meat, cheese, spreads, or veggies. Easy to make and perfectly portable, pinwheels are popular for school lunches, appetizers, or party snacks. Their fun spiral shape makes them especially appealing to kids and great for casual entertaining.

Ingredients

  • Flour tortillas: Soft and easy to roll, they’re the perfect base for holding everything together.
  • Cream cheese: Adds a creamy texture and helps the pinwheels stay intact.
  • Honey: A little sweetness goes a long way in making these extra tasty for kids.
  • Deli ham: Thin-sliced ham brings protein and classic savory flavor.
  • Cheddar cheese: Sharp or mild, cheddar gives these pinwheels that familiar sandwich flavor.
  • Baby spinach or thin cucumber slices (optional): For a fresh crunch.

How to Make Pinwheels

Make the Cream Cheese Spread

I start by mixing the softened cream cheese with honey in a small bowl until it’s smooth and easy to spread. The honey adds just enough sweetness to make these pinwheels extra kid-friendly without being overpowering.

How to Assemble Pinwheels

Next, I lay one tortilla flat on a clean surface and spread a generous layer of the cream cheese mixture all the way to the edges. Then I layer on the ham slices, followed by the cheddar cheese. If I’m adding any veggies—like baby spinach or thinly sliced cucumbers—I layer those on top of the cheese.

Roll and Slice

Once everything’s layered, I roll the tortilla up tightly into a log shape. Using a sharp knife, I slice it into 1-inch pieces. Each tortilla usually gives me 8 to 10 pinwheels, depending on how thick I slice them. If I have time, I’ll wrap the rolled tortilla in plastic wrap and pop it in the fridge for 15 to 30 minutes—this helps it firm up and makes slicing even easier.

Storing Instructions

You can store leftover pinwheels in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours—they’re best eaten the same day for the freshest texture. To make them ahead, roll the tortillas, wrap them tightly in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for a few hours or overnight. Slice them just before serving to keep the edges from drying out. If packing for lunch, keep them chilled with an ice pack until ready to eat.

Recipe Variations

  • Italian pinwheels: Use salami, pepperoni, and provolone with a layer of pesto or Italian dressing instead of honey.
  • Three meat combo: Layer ham, turkey, and roast beef with cheddar or Swiss for a hearty, deli-style version.
  • Turkey and cheese: Swap ham for sliced turkey and use your favorite cheese—add a bit of mustard or cranberry spread for extra flavor.
  • Roast beef and cheddar: Pair roast beef with sharp cheddar and a thin layer of horseradish mayo or cream cheese for a bold twist.
  • Veggie version: Skip the meat and load up with cream cheese, shredded carrots, cucumbers, spinach, or bell peppers.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How long before pinwheels get soggy?

Pinwheels can start to get soggy after about 24 hours, especially if they contain watery ingredients like cucumbers or tomatoes. To keep them fresh longer, avoid adding too much moisture and store them tightly wrapped in the fridge. For the best texture, they’re ideal when eaten the same day or within a few hours of making.

Can I use a different type of wrap instead of flour tortillas?

Yes, you can use any soft wrap your child enjoys, like whole wheat, spinach, or low-carb wraps. Just make sure it’s flexible enough to roll without cracking.

How do I keep the pinwheels from unrolling?

Spread the cream cheese mixture all the way to the edges—it helps seal the wrap when rolled. Chilling the rolled tortilla before slicing also helps the pinwheels hold their shape.

  • 2 large flour tortillas or any soft wrap your kids like
  • 4 oz cream cheese softened
  • 2 tsp honey plus extra for drizzling
