Sweet Chili Sauce

Sweet chili sauce is a staple condiment with a perfect balance of sweetness and light heat. It is typically made from a blend of red chili peppers, garlic, sugar, vinegar, and sometimes other seasonings like ginger or lime. One thing that I love about this sauce is that it can be used in a myriad of ways. from dipping spring rolls and chicken tenders to glazing meats and seafood.

Personally, I prefer the quality and flavor of 365 by Whole Foods Market Organic Sweet Chili Sauce or Mae Ploy Sweet Chili Sauce.

How to Make Sweet Chili Chicken

Begin by cutting your chicken into equal bite-sized pieces and seasoning them with paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper.

To the bowl add 1 large egg and all-purpose flour then mix and massage the chicken pieces until coated with a batter.

Heat oil in a large skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat. You’ll want enough oil to cover the bottom of the pan and provide a shallow frying environment for the chicken.

Once the oil is hot, carefully add the coated chicken pieces to the pan in a single layer, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. You may need to fry the chicken in batches depending on the size of your pan.

Fry the chicken for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Use tongs to flip the chicken pieces halfway through the cooking process to ensure even browning.

Once the chicken is cooked through and crispy, remove them from the pan and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.

In a separate saucepan, combine the butter, garlic, ginger, sweet chili sauce and soy sauce. Heat the mixture over medium heat until warmed through.

Remove the pan from the heat and add the crispy fried chicken pieces. Toss until all the pieces are coated evenly with the sauce. Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions if desired.

What to Serve with Sweet Chili Chicken

This Sweet Chili Chicken recipe is not only easy to make but also incredibly versatile. Serve it over rice or noodles for a hearty meal, or pair it with steamed vegetables for a healthier option.

How to Make Crispy Sweet Chili Chicken in the Air Fryer

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for about 3-5 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare your chicken breast pieces by seasoning them with paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper. To the bowl add 1 large egg and all-purpose flour then mix and massage the chicken pieces until coated with a batter.
  2. Once your air fryer is preheated, lightly spray the basket with cooking spray or brush it with oil to prevent sticking (optional). Arrange the coated chicken pieces in a single layer in the air fryer basket, making sure not to overcrowd them. You may need to cook the chicken in batches depending on the size of your air fryer.
  3. Cook the chicken in the air fryer for about 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through the cooking process, until they are golden brown and crispy.
  4. While the chicken is cooking, make the sweet chili sauce in a saucepan over medium heat until warmed through.
  5. Once the chicken is cooked and crispy, remove them from the air fryer and transfer them to a bowl then pour the warm sweet chili sauce over the crispy air-fried chicken pieces and toss to coat evenly..

How to Store and Reheat

Cool Down Properly: Allow the sweet chili chicken to cool down to room temperature before storing it. This prevents excess moisture buildup and ensures that the chicken stays crispy.

Store Correctly: Transfer the leftover sweet chili chicken to an airtight container or a sealable plastic bag. Make sure to remove as much air as possible before sealing. Refrigerate the chicken within two hours of cooking to maintain its freshness.

Reheat: When you’re ready to enjoy the leftover sweet chili chicken, there are a few methods you can use to reheat it:

  • Microwave: Place the chicken in a microwave-safe dish and cover it with a damp paper towel to prevent it from drying out. Heat on high for 1-2 minutes, or until heated through, stirring halfway through if necessary.
  • Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C). Place the chicken in the air fryer basket in a single layer and heat for about 5-7 minutes, or until heated through and crispy.
