This recipe wasn’t just a hit; it became a family favorite overnight. We make it over and over again. Even my toddler deems this breakfast a favorite. They are the best overnight oats for busy mornings.

What is Overnight Oats?

Overnight oats are a no-cook method of making oatmeal. Instead of cooking the oats with liquid on the stove, or in the microwave, you mix rolled oats with liquid (such as milk, almond milk, or yogurt) then store it in a sealed container to soak in the refrigerator overnight. Overnight oats are a popular breakfast choice for those seeking a quick, easy, and nutritious option that can be prepared ahead of time.

Overnight Oats with Yogurt

Incorporating yogurt into your overnight oats not only adds a creamy texture but also boosts your breakfast with extra protein and probiotics. For an easy overnight oats with yogurt recipe, simply choose your favorite yogurt—Greek for more protein or a plant-based option for a dairy-free meal.

Ingredients for Strawberry Overnight Oats

  • Rolled Oats: Also known as old fashioned oats. Generally the best choice for overnight oats due to their ideal balance of texture and absorption. Steel cut oats will be tough and quick oats will be too mushy.
  • Milk (any kind you prefer, such as dairy, almond, soy, or oat milk)
  • Fresh or Frozen Strawberries: For flavor
  • Greek Yogurt: Makes the oats extra creamy
  • Chia seeds: Optional, for extra protein and creaminess
  • Ripe Banana: For natural sweetness (optional)
  • Maple Syrup: For sweetness. You can also use honey
  • Vanilla Extract: adds flavor to the oats
  • A pinch of salt: to enhance the flavors

How to Make Strawberry Overnight Oats (3 simple steps)

Blend the Liquid Ingredients: In a blender, combine the strawberries, banana, milk, Greek yogurt, maple syrup (or honey), and vanilla extract. Blend until the mixture is smooth and creamy.

Mix the Oats with Liquid: In a medium-sized bowl or a jar that you’ll be using to store your overnight oats, add the rolled oats, pinch of salt and chia seeds (if using). Pour the blended strawberry mixture over the oats and chia seeds. Stir well to ensure that the oats are fully submerged and evenly distributed.

Refrigerate Overnight: Place it in the refrigerator and let the mixture soak for at least 8 hours, or overnight.

Serve with Toppings: The next morning, give your oats a good stir. If the mixture seems too thick, you can adjust the consistency by adding a little more milk until you reach your desired thickness. Serve your overnight oats cold, topped with additional fresh sliced strawberries, a sprinkle of granola, a dollop of nut butter, or any other toppings you love.

Are Overnight Oats Healthy?

Absolutely! Overnight oats are a powerhouse of nutrition. The oats themselves are a great source of important vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants. Paired with chia seeds, they offer omega-3 fatty acids, additional fiber, and protein. Choose natural sweeteners like maple syrup, honey or ripe bananas instead of excessive refined sugars.

The Secret to Perfect Overnight Oats

The magic of overnight oats lies in their simplicity and the soaking process. The key ratio for most overnight oats recipe is 1:1 oats to liquid but I find that a 1:1.5 ratio works best and ensures that the oats are soaked well. Allow the oats to soak overnight for at least 8 hours to softens them up, making them deliciously creamy and easy to digest.

Recipe Tips for Success

  • If you prefer your oats with a bit more chew, reduce the liquid slightly. For a thinner, more porridge-like consistency, add a little more milk.
  • Swap out strawberries for any fruit you love or have on hand. Blueberries, raspberries, and diced apples are fantastic options.
  • Feel free to add a scoop of your favorite protein powder or a handful of nuts for extra protein and healthy fats.
  • Knowing how to store overnight oats is key. In an airtight container in the fridge, they can last up to 5 days, making them the perfect meal prep option.

What Are The Best Oats for Overnight Oats

The best oats for making overnight oats are rolled oats, also known as old-fashioned oats. Rolled oats are preferred for several reasons:

  • They have a pleasant, chewy texture that holds up well when soaked overnight.
  • Rolled oats absorb the liquid (such as milk, almond milk, or yogurt) just right, softening enough to eat without any cooking but still retaining some bite.
