Why This is the Best Air Fryer Cod Fish Recipe

  • A Healthy Alternative: Enjoy the crispy crunch of a deep fried fish sandwich with fewer calories and no greasy residue from oil.
  • Better Than Fast Food: No waiting in a drive-thru, no soggy buns, and it’s completely customized to your liking with fresh ingredients. Plus, it’s budget friendly!
  • Absolutely Delicious: From the flavor to the texture, nothing about this sandwich is bland or boring.

Ingredients

Fried Cod Fish

  • Cod fillet: Given the other elements of this recipe, I use a mild flavored fish that’s sturdy enough to handle a coating of breadcrumbs. It stays moist and goes so well with the other flavors.
  • Eggs: This helps the flour and breadcrumbs stick to the surface of the fish.
  • Panko breadcrumbs: For that delectable crunch.
  • Parsley: For a fresh pop of herby flavor.
  • All purpose flour: This coating provides a crunchy later and also seals in moisture.
  • Seasoning: garlic powder, salt, cayenne pepper, smoked paprika

Coleslaw

  • Pre-chopped coleslaw mix: The base of the coleslaw.
  • Mayonnaise: For that creamy texture.
  • Apple cider vinegar: This adds a burst of bright flavor with hint of tanginess.
  • Lemon juice: For a pop of citrus flavor.
  • Seasoning: Season simply with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
  • Granulated sugar: A touch of sweetness enhances the other flavors.
  • Sriracha: For a little added heat.

Tartar Sauce

  • Mayonnaise: The base of the sauce.
  • Herbs: Use fresh, finely chopped parsley and dill.
  • Dill pickle: Finely chopped.
  • Capers: Add chopped capers for that distinct briny flavor.
  • Lemon juice: For a fresh, zesty flavor.
  • Seasoning: ground black pepper, salt, onion powder, dijon mustard

Season & Bread Cod Fish

To make the air fryer cod fish, pat dry the cod fish fillets and season on both sides with salt and pepper. Using three separate bowls, prepare the breading ingredients. In one bowl whisk the egg, in another bowl mix together the flour, salt, pepper, paprika, cayenne pepper and garlic powder. In the third bowl, mix together the breadcrumbs and parsley.

Dip each cod fillet into the flour mix, next into the egg mixture then the panko breadcrumbs until well coated.

Air Fry Cod Fish

Transfer the breaded cod fillets to a preheated air fryer and spray each with cooking spray. Cook at 400F for 10-12 minutes then remove the fillets from the air fryer basket.

Assemble Air Fryer Cod Fish Sandwich

To assemble your fish sandwich, spread some of the homemade tartar sauce on the bottom of the bun, add the fried cod fillet and hot sauce if you like it spicy then finish with the cole slaw. Cover with the top bun and enjoy with a side salad or chips.

Recipe Variations

  • Fish: Use any white fish you want. This would be absolutely delicious with flounder, pollock, tilapia, or sea bass.
  • Add cheese: Place one slice of American cheddar cheese on top of the air fried cod for a melty, divine sandwich that would beat out a Filet-O-Fish any day of the week!
  • Frozen Fish: Although fresh fish is preferred, you can use frozen cod fish. Add at least 2-3 minutes to the cooking time but monitor it closely.
  • Additional Toppings: This air fryer codfish sandwich is fully loaded but if you opt to take out the coleslaw and the tartar sauce, consider adding lettuce, onions, or tomatoes.

Storing Leftovers

This is the type of recipe best served fresh. Each component should be stored separately, in airtight containers. The fish should be consumed within two days. The coleslaw is good for 5 days and the tartar sauce will last a week.

To reheat the cod fish, warm it up in the air fryer at 375F for 2-3 minutes or until heated through.
